X-Plane Scenery for Orlando Executive Airport (KORL)

Requirements

This scenery works with versions of X-Plane that supports .DSF overlays (8.30 or higher). I tested it only with 8.40.

Instructions

Download Scenery Package (.zip 2.1Mb)

Download the compressed file and uncompress in the Custom Scenery directory of your X-Plane installation. You will probably have to tweak your rendering settings for your scenery to look like the screenshots. Under Settings->Rendering Options, set the "Number of Objects" to "None". This will disable all of the default X-Plane objects (which are unrealistic for Orlando) and only the custom objects will appear. You will also need to turn on some more roads. Under Settings->Rendering Options set "Number of Roads" to "Tons."

Screenshots

The following is a collection of screenshots from my scenery package alongside actual photos of Orlando Executive Airport. The goal of this scenery is to reproduce the prominent landmarks used by pilots when taking off and landing using visual flight rules. Therefore, I spent a lot of time trying to get the correct placement and orientation for the objects. The 3D models and textures are not quite as nice as they could be.

Aerial Photo

A view from overhead, showing most of the added 3D objects. The most interesting 3D models are the Fashion Square Mall (left), the Showalter Flying Services building (blue dot, center) and the control tower (barely visible, just above center).

Runway 25

A Cessna taxis near the end of Runway 25. Note the prominent trees in the photo that are not well reproduced in X-Plane. I have yet to see a PC-based simulator that does an adequate job of depicting foliage. This is important, because tree cover is the most visible feature of many cities when viewed from the above. It is also important to provide height cues for pilots when they are flying near the ground on takeoff or landing.

Control Tower

View of the control tower. Once again, the foliage is noticeably absent.

Orlando Skyline

The Orlando skyline, as viewed from the airport. Custom models are used for the SunTrust Center and the Bank of America Building. The Orange County Courthouse is coming soon. In the screenshot, you can also see the Schowalter building and several parked Cessnas.
